The courtesan, Sonogi, employed by Hikitaya Utaro from the Yoriai-quarter. "When I notified the people on Deshima about the message from Hikitaya saying that Sonogi had delivered a baby about 10 o'clock in the evening (in Doza). The claim was made that it should be recorded that the child was born on the night of the 6th on Deshima, and not in Doza. I therefore have sent 5 Dutch interpreters to convince the people on Deshima." May 7, 1828 Ashikari Takanoshin ---- Head of the Yoriai-quarter"Taken from the "Records of Yoria-quarter" |

Red marks are rooms for medical officer. It is conceivable that Siebold occupied the rooms, since he was only one medical officer of the Dutch Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie at Dejima at the time. Both pictures, "Deshima" and "Dezima," are descriptions of Dejima around 1828 (Bunsei 11), when Siebold actively worked there. Siebold stored his vast collection and supplementary materials in the following places. |

In order to find a new world, the Dutch expeditionary party dispatched a fleet of five sailing boats to the Orient from the Rotterdam harbor in 1598. During the voyage, three boats sank at the Strait of Magellan and one in the Pacific.
The last one, De Liefde, was finally washed ashore to "Bungo no Kuni (Oita Prefecture)" in 1600.
A British, Adams (later called "Miura Anjin") was piloting the boat. Only 20 crews out of 100 survived.
It was just a desperate voyage. Japanese-Dutch relationship began from then. Nagasaki was the only port opened to foreign countries because of Japanese closed-door policy.
Year 2000 was the 400th anniversary of the coming of "De Liefde." There had been miscelloaneous events happened during the 400 years.
The interesting history of Nagasaki will be introduced in this webpage by spotlighting people and incidents that took very important roles in it.
Also, some new interpretations related to Dr. Siebold, a benefactor of the modernization of Japan, are advanced with historical records.
