Biography of Kagemitsu Hasegawa
1. Outline of activities
About Kagemitsu Hasegawa's research activities, he focused on two areas,
and collects materials for study, mostly at research section in The Society
of Ancient Court Music, Kogagakunokai.
The first field is the decipherment and the restoration of Gagaku scores in the Heian period.
He has "Shinsen gaku-fu(Ryuteki tablature)" which is the world oldest flute tablature in existance by Minamoto no Hiromasa, "Ryuteki-fu" by Oga no Motomasa, the ancient Kagura flute tablature, "Sango youroku(Gakubiwa tablature)" and "Jinchi youroku(Gakusou tablature)" by Fujiwara no Moronaga, as his main research materials.
The second field is application of Kagemitsu Hasagawa's original musical
scale theory to Gagaku music.
On the basis of the theory "A relation between the odd number stability of the tonal scale and the music evolution" (The theory of "The tonality has the most stable state on 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 odd number scales, and it closely related to the music evolution".), applies it to "The music theory of the Tang period" (The Key in Gagaku music = Mode), then its advancement.
Based on these two results of his study, he performs and composes music as he put them into practice.
Then he teaches playing at these sections in order to popularize and hand
down Gagaku in the Heian period from generation to generation, and to fuse
it with modern Gagaku, trains performers for " Ancient Court Music
Eensemble, HEIANGAKUSHA".
Also, Kagemitsu Hasegawa restored and established the particular way of
playing Hichiriki and Hosho, which was called "HAKUGARYU".
And he established the way of percussion in old style.
Then he revived the performance of Gakubiwa and Gakusou in the manner of Fujiwara no Moronaga, called "The Myouon-in School of Gagaku Strings".
He works on popularizing them and to hand them down from generatioin to generation.
Moreover, Gagaku in the Heian period was not only the music for the ceremonies
and the functions, but was the music played at banquets, and as music acquisition.
