Insho and Informel / "Gutai" / "Bokusho"
---Avant-Garde after World War II
August 12 (Fri),2011 - October 23 (Sun),2011
Domoto Insho took on a big challenge in creating new beauties since the
mid-1950s.
Gradually parting from figurative motifs, he executed abstract paintings
which enabled the expression of spiritual beauty using "sumi" black lines
and colors.
This unique abstract expression using Japanese painting materials was named
"Shin Zokei (New modeling)" by Insho himself, and has been recognized also
in Western countries.
The background to the "Shin Zokei" was greatly linked to the art scene
in Western countries of that time, where abstract expressionist movements
such as Informel were flourishing.
This exhibition will present a variety of Insho's challenging works along
with Morita Shiryu's related "Bokusho (ink abstract)" movement as well
as the "Gutai Bijutsu Kyokai (Figurative Art Association)" which developed
avant-garde practices.
(Some of the works are going to be replaced during the session.)

The 120th anniversary of Insho Domoto's birth in cooperation with the 26th
National Cultural Festival Greatly
Multi - artist: Domoto Insho
---Japanese painting, Western painting, Solid work, Architecture, and Design
October 28 (Fri),2011 - December 11 (Sun),2011
Insho Domoto was born in Kyoto in 1891.
His work was accepted for the first time by the 1st "Teiten" exhibition
in 1919, and he was active mainly at the "Kanten" exhibition thus establishing
his position as a leading figure in Japan's art world.
Accordingly, he has been known as a Japanese-style painter, but he also
actively produced oil paintings and watercolors, as well as solid works
such as ceramics and sculptures.
Furthermore, in his last days, he planned to build a museum to house his
own works, and his interior/exterior designs for the museum were materialized.
This is a good example of how diverse his creative activities were.
This exhibition will introduce his achievements from various angles, considering
him as a greatly diverse artist who created in a variety of modes beyond
the framework of a Japanese-style painter.

Insho Domoto passionately painted landscapes of European cities in parallel
with Japanese natural scenery such as mountains, rivers, valleys, and woods.
His diverse modes of expression convey a wet atmosphere using ink, or the
sense of light in bright colors.
A number of sketches drawn on site were part of an indispensable process
to complete a final work.
This exhibition will show these sketches along with a variety of landscapes
selected from his works.
We hope you will see his interest in landscapes through his expressions
of cities and nature.
